Review: Chhabi Te Kabita by Karunakar Pradhan
It is a visual and shape poetry in Bengali Literature laced
with cultural themes. It is an emerging trend blending artistic visuals with
poetry, symbolizing deeper philosophical and spiritual ideas. These poems often
take the form of shapes like trees, birds, or sacred objects, enhancing their
symbolic meaning in Bengali traditions and history of the state.
Visually, at large, these bilingual poems symbolize
cultural, spiritual, and natural elements like the sacred pot, butterfly, and
tree. The visual form reinforces themes of devotion, transformation,
protection, and social critique. Many poems depict religious motifs such as
Tulsi, sacred pots, and divine images as expressions of faith. They reflect
Bengali and Indian spiritual traditions emphasizing devotion, morality, and
divine presence. By using concrete structures and shapes, these poems are
crafted into recognizable images, linking form with content. Examples include
shapes of a drum, umbrella, or butterfly, which embody cultural rituals and
philosophical ideas.
The poetry collection also houses literary and social
messages, critique social issues like arrogance, corruption, social decay, and
moral blindness. It rather promotes humility, harmony with nature, and
spiritual awakening through symbolic language.
Additionally the book creates international relevance and
artistic value, these poems connect Bengali innovation with global traditions
of mystical and moral poetry. They expand the boundaries of modern and
postmodern literature through their artistic visual expressions.
Since there are 90 poems in it, the range of its themes and
aspects is not only long but also worth cogitating. These visual and concrete
poems merge textual expression with spatial design, typography, and visual
arrangement. Pradhan’s poetry book instead of following a traditional linear
progression of words, follows a physical layout of the text on the page that
forms a picture or visual shape that matches the theme of the poem (for
example, a poem about sun arranged in a round shape). Ultimately, this book is
different and it bridges the gap between literature and visual arts.
